My students need to fulfill sensory needs in order to improve behaviors and focus. Based on a recommendation from an occupational therapist these chairs would greatly help.

My Students
I am a special education teacher who works with students struggling with difficult behaviors. This year my class consists of six special young men. The requested tent and bean bag chairs will allow me to create a chill zone/sensory corner to help relax students experiencing sensory overload.
My students struggle daily with focus and sensory needs.
My classroom is extremely small and due to limited space my students have difficulty finding a comfortable and acceptable way to control their sensory impulses in our setting. My goal is to create an area where students can satisfy their sensory needs in a way that allows them to continue to meet the goals of the academic setting. These chairs and tent will help to meet some of those needs during daily instruction. My students are active, young boys with a lot of energy and creativity. A learning environment that embraces their energetic spirit and allows them to learn when they are calm and comfortable will be invaluable to us.
My Project
My lessons are broken down into two portions. First a story or problem is presented in front of the room on a Smart Board. After several days of this type of instruction I experienced my students struggling to remain engaged and seated. An occupational therapist recommended sitting the students on a softer more comfortable type of furniture. That is where the idea of bean bag chairs came from. We have experimented with bean bag chairs found in other areas of the school and the students really enjoyed them. I envision the sensory corner that we will create to be a place where we can do instruction, read stories, and do other activities that require the students to give attention. Other instruction has to be done in a chair with a desk in order to complete the teacher made materials, however I think moving back and forth in the classroom to the different areas during the course of the lesson will help keep the students engaged and interested.
Your donation will allow me to meet the sensory, academic, and social needs of my students.
The bean bag chairs will help to keep students seated and on task. They will be able to sway in their seats and the sensations created by the movement in the chairs will help to calm them so that they can learn and focus. The tent will be used to help manage excitable students in the classroom instead of sending them out of the room to miss out on instruction. Please help create a sensory sanctuary!
