Sensory Music

My Students

My students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of my students face health challenges due to the severity of their disability. Several of my students face additional struggles such as poverty or homelessness.

My students have an innate capacity for connection and self-expression in and through music experiences.

Through music, many of my students are able to more easily access communication and expression modalities that build their self-esteem, resilience, independence, and community involvement skills.

My students are learning pre-academic skills such as joint attention, attention to task, and following directions so they can be successful in the special education classroom as well as in mainstream classrooms. My students are also learning social emotional skills such as cooperation, calming and coping skills, and kindness, so they can make and keep friends at school.

My Project

These materials will provide sensory input for my students in music therapy. Many of my students have disabilities that make it difficult for them to remain seated, remain calm, and/or focus for extended periods. Using sensory objects and tools provides a scaffold for students to work toward independent ways to focus and pay attention.

The weighted lap and neck pads will help my students with sensory needs to focus and calm down during music therapy sessions.

The wobble cushions will give my wiggly students a way to wiggle in their seats while they also engage in seated activities. The fidgets will give my students a way to calm down and refocus. The parachute and ocean drum will provide lots of meaningful sensory experiences in music therapy.
