My Project

Our district is opening new Special Education classrooms, and is committed to supporting them with music therapy programming. With budget funding for materials unknown, we want to make sure our students have access to high quality materials. We also need to ensure students with sensory support needs have access to materials that will not be overstimulating.

These sensory motor materials will allow our students to engage with music in creative and individualized ways, giving them access to see, feel, and play with the music.

Hands-on learning with props is an evidence-based strategy in music education and music therapy, and students will be able to extend learning and engagement with these tools.

Foam blocks can be drums for students with sensory sensitivity, an object to squeeze to practice calming and coping skills, or visuals to help students explore pitch. Breathing balls can be a low stim way to help students see the beat, use and see their breath, or improvise with a melody. Bean bags can help students feel the rhythm and receive proprioceptive input to help keep them regulated. Bubbles are wonderful calming tools and motivators. Polyspots and Velcro floor dots give students a visual and tactile target / space marker for music and movement experiences.
