My Students

In my classroom, students struggle when it comes to focusing during instruction. The urge to move makes it hard. Days when they do this well are good days. We want more of these days. Manipulatives and wiggle seats will help them focus. And to help create more good days.

My students are girls, in every sense of the word.

They love Powerpuff Girls and Frozen. They love to show off their new nail polish. They love Beyonce. They are also strong, and kind, and above all, they are sisters. They rise and fall together. We encourage each other. We celebrate the good times and lift each other up during the bad. When someone is sad, there is always another scholar there to give her a hug. Being at an all girls Title I school in SE DC certainly has it's challenges, but these girls face those difficulties with grace and strength. We are so proud of the learning we have accomplished this year and cannot wait to soar to new heights by the end of the year.

My Project

Being that they are 4 and 5 years old, my students have a hard time sitting still. That is common of any 4 and 5 year old. But in this school, we expect them to learn. Pre-k here is a rigorous program that looks in a lot of ways like what you would expect in a kindergarten classroom. These manipulatives will help channel my students natural energy into something productive, something they can learn from. The molding clay will be used to build gross and fine motor strength. Students will use it during centers to make letters, numbers, shapes, and whatever else they can dream up. The linking people and cubes will be used for math, counting, sorting, building, measuring which is vital skill for kindergarten, and life. They will also provide a movement piece so scholars are stuck with worksheets. The seating pads will help my particularly wiggly students channel their energy into their pad while sitting on the carpet. That way they are less tempted to move and distract others.

Students behavior is impacted by how well they focus.

When they aren't focused, usually through no fault of their own, it makes it harder for them to follow the rules. When they do focus, they are praised, giving them the confidence they need to work hard throughout the day. By giving them manipulatives and wiggle pads to channel this energy, students will see improved focus and improved behavior. Then their confidence goes up, they are ready to learn, and they reach all their learning goals.
