I teach a self-contained autism unit at a school with 2 other self-contained special education teachers. All three of us work closely together to provide students with age-appropriate opportunities to grasp academic, social, and environmental concepts. Our students require repetitious modeling and continuous visual supports. In order to provide our student with optimal learning opportunities, we need to be able to give them real-life experiences that increase their background knowledge. Many of our students lack working memory skills, therefore increasing background knowledge with hands-on modeling and experiences is so vital to gain academic success.
My Project
If my project is funded then my students will be able to be educated social emotionally in first response situations by first responders. If we are able to educate our first responders on how to use the sensory kits to calm our students down, then the first responders will then be able to educate and support our students’ growth in the area on social emotional skills. Students with special needs get overwhelmed easily in traumatic situations and students need the support to grow their social emotional skills outside the classroom and in the community. There are no better people to serve our students with their social emotional skills than our first responders/community helpers. The sensory kits would be an educational tool to support first responders in calming students so that they are able to educate and support them in emergency situations.
