My Students

Special Education is not all that special; it is just a class where we can meet their needs. Accessible education means that each student can learn and grow in a supportive and individualized environment. My team and I have already started working hard to learn the unique needs of our students and have brought in items from home or borrowed items from veteran teachers. But now, it is time to make this supportive environment permanent!

Creating an accessible space means that we really have to think about the physical layout of a classroom and the sensory needs of each student.

By using items like large format clocks, sensory toys, open shelving, and ambiance-enriching decor, I can help create an environment that students can thrive in.

My Project

All educators, especially those in special education, make a commitment to provide a supportive and functional classroom. This is the first step to learning and the rest of the progress comes from there. For some students, that means a classroom with flexible seating; for others, it means access to extra food or clothes. For my students, it means a safe space where they can engage in appropriate sensory play during their break time.

Having a safe space to meet their sensory needs is critical to their success in the classroom.

Without that, they are battling themselves all day while trying to learn. By including structured breaks in a structured space, their minds are free for learning. The challenge is creating the space and having the resources.

That's where you come in! What looks like a list of random items is really the backbone of a sensory corner. Fidgets, sand, playdoh, stretch balls, a soft rug, and a dark-colored shelf to block off the space come together to be the savior of the classroom. I am so excited to bring this space to life and I hope you are too!
