Sensory Items Needed For Autism Classroom

My students need special seating and lighting because they all have a diagnosis of autism. These items will help keep them calm so they can learn more effectively.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom can range from very calm to very crazy in a matter of seconds. The students I serve have a variety of sensory needs related to autism. The students generally need time to move around or need special seating that allows them to move in order to reach the academic goals.

My students range in age from Kindergarten to third grade.

I have all boys this year and they are the greatest group of kids. They are sweet, fun, smart and on some days rather challenging to work with. Everyday they put a smile on my face and I am blessed to get to be their teacher. Our school strives to meet the needs of all of our students in the building. As a building we have switched from traditional classrooms to open concept classrooms. This allows the students to find an area that is most comfortable for them and that promotes learning for each individual student. As a whole we have seen our students perform better and have seen a decrease in the number of behavior issues we have at school.

My Project

The items that I have requested will allow for more flexible seating in my classroom. The wiggle stools will allow my students the ability to move while they are still doing their learning. The inflatable light-up chair will help in creating a calm area for the students to go if they need time to "chill out". Also the special lighting helps students with autism calm down when they are feeling anxious or over stimulated. The special lighting will be used during these times to help calm the students down.

This project will in make a difference because it will provide a variety of sensory input options for the students with autism.

All of my students are very busy and need to move around. The wiggle stools will allow us to still teach the kids the things they need while allowing them to also move around. The inflatable chair will make a huge difference for those students who need time to just chill and calm down. The special lighting will also create a calming environment for the students.
