My Project

I am a special education teacher at an OTC school, namely a school that is an occupational training center for the special needs population it services. Our curriculum is geared to preparing the young adults entrusted in our care to become effective, functioning members of society via functional and vocational training. My classroom is comprised of 5 young adults on the autism spectrum. They continue to have ongoing delays with expressive/receptive language, social communication skills, cognitive skills and behavioral challenges, regardless of their developmental level.

Children with autism can experience either an overload of sensory input or be sensory seeking.

Both of these can be overwhelming and lead to feelings of anxiety or stress, which is why it's important to involve sensory breaks in these children's schedules. A Sensory Break is a designated portion of time that may allow a child to deescalate from the sensory stimulation of the classroom setting. Sensory breaks also are beneficial for students that benefit from additional movement or deep pressure input opportunities to help with focus, attention, and learning. By ensuring that my students have these breaks, I am enabling them to learn and succeed. I’ve set up a sensory station in my classroom where the students can earn sensory breaks. Currently the station includes beanbags, a weighted blanket and sensory bins with different toys/activities. The students’ faces light up when they are awarded a sensory break. They are then able to learn and participate in lessons afterwards.

Therefore, I am requesting funding for additional sensory manipulatives to enhance my sensory station. In this way, the students are exposed to varied sensory modalities that best fit their needs. I look forward to my students’ success once their sensory needs are met!
