My Students

My students range in age from 14-18 and all have moderate to severe special needs. Student needs range from orthopedic, intellectual disabilities, speech/communication, behavioral, and many other special needs. The students I work with in particular, have many different sensory input needs. My students are loving, communicative, everyday learners. These great kids, however, have a very difficult time showing others how they feel and what they are thinking. Every day is a challenge, that is why it is so important to make every day and every opportunity count!

My Project

Students with intellectual disabilities, and specifically students with autism spectrum disorder, benefit from a sensory diet which includes activities that incorporate sensory integration opportunities. Sensory integration is how our body reacts to sensory input so that we can do the things we do in every day life such as walking up and down stairs, drinking a warm or cold beverage, sitting in a chair, wearing clothes that do not annoy our skin.

Many of our students have challenges interpreting sensory input, therefor may seek out inappropriate sensory stimulus.

With the requested items we can provide learning experiences that "feed" our students central nervous system.

By providing opportunities for touch exploration while using the pin board, sequin pillow and fidget toys, or assisting with visual acuity through the use of lights and ocean wave projector, working on balance, vestibular (inner ear) and proprioception activities while using the balance board and bungee chair, and utilizing the body sock and weighted blankets to provide opportunities for touch and weight experiences, we create opportunities to practice how our bodies interpret these senses and to increase our students overall health, education, and well being.
