I teach a self-contained Early Childhood Special Education class in a Title 1 school for students with moderate to severe disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. We work on a variety of readiness skills, with a large emphasis on behavior and social skills. Our classroom is geared toward helping our students be as independent as possible.
My students are amazing children who are an inspiration to me and to all who know them!
They are eager to learn and want to be successful. Although they have many challenges to overcome, they never give up! I love teaching them how to interact with others, how to clean up after themselves, and how to deal with their emotions.
Research has shown that a sensory integration approach is vital for children with autism. My students need sensory materials, including weighted materials, materials with various textures, and materials with various visual stimuli. I plan to use these materials to create a safe space with an emphasis on sensory integration where students can go when they are seeking sensory input or output.
Your donations to my classroom will have an impact on my students' lives by giving them a safe space within the classroom to meet their sensory needs.
