My Students

I am a New York City public school educator. I am a part of a district which is a cohort of many schools across our city and has the highest amount of special needs students. Our district is specifically designed to educate students with disabilities. My students have Autism and multiple disabilities. They are also economically disadvantaged. Our district works a 12-month program, so it is essential to have appropriate educational materials and curriculum to support them and meet their individualized learning needs.

I teach students with disabilities and 100% of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.

Students often come to us with many struggles from home. I want their education to be fun and exciting. In my classroom we use technology to learn and grow!

For children with disabilities, it is essential to meet their sensory needs in order support their education. For my students, it is essential to have supplies for hands-on project-based learning that uses sensory to engage and excite them. By addressing their sensory needs, I can have students concentrating and working on STEAM based projects. I can only do that with your help!

My Project

Have you ever felt like you could not wait for your workday to end? Felt like you wanted to jump out of your own skin because your senses were on overload? Well my students feel like this every day. Children who have Autism benefit greatly not only from academics, but from sensory input. My students are very sensory oriented children. They need a lot of sensory activity throughout the day. There is a need for many different sensory activities. My students are not a one-size-fits-all group. I teach children from K-6. These tiles will help to soothes them so they can learn. With these sensory items, my children will be able to take control of their senses and help them self regulate their needs. My students need help from the staff to remain and become both centered and grounded. I am hoping with these tiles they can regulate their needs themselves to help them concentrate. For most people, effective sensory processing and sensory integration occur automatically. But for children with Autism, and other delays, this is a real challenge. Providing them with a calming sensory environment will provide them the opportunities they need to learn. My students use the tiles to stomp, jump, run, push and get the input that they need to help them continue to concentrate on our lessons. They can even go on a desk or on the floor so their input can be at their reach. They can also be tied into all of our science lessons on motion, colors, forces, because students will be able to see the reactions that occur while they are getting their sensory input! You can help me, help my students! Thank you!
