My Project

This is a collaboration project between OT, Speech, the Psychology Department, and our Special Education Teachers to help provide our school with materials to better service our students. Our school serves 418 students between 3-k and 8th grade in West Harlem, many of whom have sensory needs and difficulty attending to tasks.

In order to best support their diverse needs within the classroom and during transitions, we want to create sensory corners inside our special classrooms and a sensory hallway.

The sensory corners provide a designated area inside the classroom that students can go to self-regulate when they are starting to feel overwhelmed. It will provide them with a safe and private space to use learned tools that will help them to calm down or feel better, therefore allowing them to engage with their peers and adults more appropriately and access the curriculum. A sensory hallway is a series of guided movements for kids to follow, shown by markings on the ground and walls. As the students follow the path and complete the movements, they work off excess energy, develop their gross motor skills, eye hand coordination, spatial awareness, get sensory input, etc. Additionally, it can work on improving math skills and language skills. The sensory hallway can benefit all students in the school, not just those with sensory needs.
