My Project

In our MI-A classroom, we support students with autism, many of whom experience sensory processing challenges. Sensory behaviors are a natural part of their daily experiences, and providing a structured, supportive environment is essential for their learning and well-being. To better meet their needs, we are planning to create a sensory corner filled with sensory toys, fidget tools, and other supportive materials. This project will provide a safe space for students to self-regulate, manage sensory overload, and enhance their overall classroom experience.

A sensory corner is a designated area designed to help students cope with overwhelming stimuli by offering tools that promote self-soothing and focus.

Our sensory corner will include various sensory-friendly materials such as fidget toys, textured objects, weighted stufftoys, noise-canceling headphones, and soft lighting. These items will allow students to engage their senses in a way that is calming and helps them regain control when they feel overstimulated.

The benefits of a sensory corner extend beyond just reducing stress. Sensory tools can improve focus, attention, and engagement in classroom activities. For example, fidget toys can help students channel their energy in a non-disruptive way, allowing them to remain attentive during lessons. Weighted blankets or lap pads provide deep-pressure input, which can have a soothing effect on students who need extra sensory support. Additionally, providing a quiet space for students to retreat when they feel overwhelmed can prevent meltdowns and help them develop self-regulation strategies.

By incorporating sensory-friendly materials into our classroom, we are taking an important step toward fostering a positive and accommodating learning environment. This project will provide our students with the necessary tools to manage sensory challenges, enhance their focus, and ultimately succeed in their education.
