My Project

This is a team collaboration project between Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, the Psychology Department, and our Special Education Teachers to help provide our school with materials to better service our awesome students. Our AMAZING and DIVERSE elementary school serves 418 students between 3-k and 8th grade in West Harlem.

Our school has enrolled several students with sensory needs, some of them with severe sensory issues.

In order to best support their diverse needs within the classroom and during transitions, we want to create sensory corners inside our special classrooms.

The purpose of the sensory corner is to have a designated area inside the classroom that students can go to self-regulate when they are starting to feel overwhelmed. It will provide them with a safe and private space to use learned tools that will help them to calm down or feel better. Tools within the sensory corner will include an oil timer (visual tool to help calm down), Theraputty to squeeze (for proprioception), handheld massager for vibration, noise canceling headphones (to take a break from the noise in the classroom), sequin pillow (for touching), etc. The students will utilize the sensory corner for a set amount of time and return to class instruction calmer and more focused, therefore allowing them to engage with their peers and adults more appropriately and access the curriculum.
