My Project

As a pediatric OT working in a lower income area with students with special needs, one of largest struggles the kids have is the ability to self regulate when they are feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. This is a skill that is worked on everyday, to help the students be able to overcome their struggles, and be in a state where they are ready to learn.

As an OT, my role is to help promote independence, self regulation skills, self confidence, to show them that they can do anything they set their minds to, and that they are in control.

With a donation to this project, this sensory light table and manipulatives can be setup in my therapy room. This will provide a calm down space for my students. It will give them tools to use in order to help them calm down and refocus as well as work on their fine motor and manupulation skills. They can sit and look at it and use the calming glow to process their emotions and have a moment to contemplate the next steps they need to take to be able to refocus on the tasks they need to complete. They can also work on hand strength and letter recognition skills . They will also work on hand manipulation skills for increased support to help with handwriting skills. A donation to this project will provide my students a way to be more successful with their academics and also promote self confidence knowing that they have a way to calm themselves down. Any support would be very greatly appreciated, more than words can express. The students will be very excited to use this light table and manipualtives to help them learn, as they are motivated to learn and want to make their teachers proud.
