My Students

I teach in a diverse, Title I school in a suburb of Washington, DC. Preschool is often the children's first time being away from their parents, so I strive to make it a fun and engaging environment.

My preschool class includes two, three, four, and five-year-olds with special needs as well as a few typically developing peer models.

The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down Syndrome, blindness, autism, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and language disorders. I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally and linguistically diverse families and many face socio-economic challenges.

My Project

My students need some new toys and supplies to help meet their sensory needs. Students who frequently mouth toys and eat non-food objects will benefit from new types of chewy-tubes to meet their oral-motor needs. New toys for playdough, such as alphabet and counting mats, will help develop fine motor and academic skills. Alphabet knowledge can also be developed in the water table with the Float and Find Alphabet Bubbles.

Kinetic sand, Floof, and Mad Mattr will help provide a wide-range of sensations and experiences for my students.

Do-a-Dot markers will provide visual and olfactory input, the children can make art and enjoy new smells simultaneously.

New fidget toys will be helpful for children who need to move during circle time. I like to have a variety of fidgets available, so that all students are able to have their needs met while sitting and participating in daily activities. Finally, the Activty Arch will support the needs of children with physical disabilities. They will be able to lay down and interact with a variety of toys hanging above them, developing vision, motor skills, and coordination.
