My Project

I am a Family and Consumer Sciences educator at a high school in Hardin Montana. We are a rural high poverty area with a town population of approximately 4000 people. Our nearest population center of Billings MT is an hour away, approximately 50 miles. Our School population is nearly 85-90% native American students and most of them live on The Crow Indian Reservation in Southeastern Montana. A large percentage of our school population comes from extreme poverty households.

This project will help my students to complete their sewing assignments for the upcoming semester.

I will have around 100 students sewing this second semester. We have limited availability for purchasing fabric in Hardin itself and our nearest stores for buying material are in Billings, 50 miles away.

Many of my native students have learned how to sew taking my FCS classes and have gone on to continue sewing into adulthood. In adulthood, they create their elk tooth dresses, T-dresses, hand-game regalia and other pieces of clothing they wear for special occasions, pow-wows and cultural celebrations. They also make star quilts and other types of quilts for gift giving and daily use.

My FCS classes provide a place to learn how to operate machines, cut and sew with accuracy and generally provides a strong foundation for later sewing skills. Many STEM skills are applied in my classes.

Funding these projects becomes very expensive and a strain on my classroom budget. Not only is material expensive, few students can afford much fabric and it requires a day of shopping in Billings to get supplies. Donors Choose is a godsend because it helps to with the material purchases necessary for my students. I appreciate the help I have received so far through this fantastic program. Thank You.
