My Students

Move like Jagger? Nah, we want to Act Like Scientists! My students want to BE scientists and interact with real materials while wearing safety goggles, lab shirts and using real scientific tools.

My students are a highly-motivated, science-loving group of 7,8, and 9 year olds who enjoy discussing anything and everything!

Our classroom is part of a large elementary school of Pre-K through 6th grade students. All come from families near or below the poverty line. Most, though not all, speak Spanish as a first language and many have relatives that also attend(ed) our campus.

My Project

My students need tools of scientists such as microscopes, goggles, and stopwatches that will help them feel like "real scientists" as they meet the grade level standards. We are fortunate that the school district supplies us with hands-on Science curriculum (FOSS) that provides hands-on experiences with real materials. Unfortunately we are limited to a few kits thus we are not provided with all we need to explore and think deeply about our world. With the materials requested from Donors Choose, the student's scientific experience will be improved by using microscopes to investigate hard to see objects, measuring tools like tape measures, stopwatches, measuring cups and spoons to be precise when experimenting, and goggles to "feel" like scientists as they explore, learn safety procedures and investigate and inquire.

The students in our class love to learn and love to talk.

Science is a perfect subject for them. They get to talk to each other, touch real materials, question what is happening and why it is happening and then go home and share with their families. By engaging students early on in their academic careers, they will be more prepared for learning the more rigorous curriculum in high school and college. Who knows you may be supporting the next Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, or Rachel Carson?
