My Students

I teach an accelerated second grade class at a Title I school where a majority of students qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. My students come from a wide range of households speaking many different languages and having varying levels of access to learning opportunities outside of school.

What binds my students together is their sense of a class family.

They know that when they enter their classroom, they can count on each other for help, advice, and encouragement. Most of our activities are based on cooperative learning and teamwork.

My Project

Children need many opportunities to explore and make discoveries about the world around them all by themselves and for themselves. My students need an area in the classroom where they can choose a science center which interests them and just play and experiment with it.

My class needs a variety of science centers: a set of rock and mineral specimens, magnifiers, simple machines, and magnets to manipulate independently or in collaboration with a partner.

The scientific process begins with wondering and inquiry. These centers will spark my students' curiosity in abundance!
