A typical day in my classroom is spent working on functional skills with students. We follow the mandated curriculum but we also take many sensory breaks. Sensory breaks are important for my students! Without sensory breaks, it's difficult for my students to sit and complete tasks.
I have 11 students in my SDC-Autism program.
We incorporate many activities to make sure that the students remain focused and motivated. My students have a lot of sensory needs and are on what the professionals like to call a "sensory diet." This means they need to be exposed to various sensory related stimuli throughout the day.
My Project
My students will use this item during sensory break time. Right now my students have only one box of kinetic sand, because it's very expensive and they all love it! I think that with this table and a few boxes of kinetic sand, they will really be able to enjoy their sensory breaks and more students will be able to participate at a time. This will also encourage them to interact with each other and they will have time to work on their social skills too!
Creating a positive learning environment is the most important aspect of any education.
Special needs students really must have an outlet to express themselves and gain access to their needs. Many of my students are just now finding ways to cope with maladaptive behaviors and sensory issues and so it's so important for them to be to have a place to be able to get their sensory needs fulfilled that is appropriate, safe, and fun. This sand center will help my students do just that!
