My Students

My students are just learning to closely read literature and analyze their reading. If they are to be successful on the AP Literature test, they need books that push their skills to a new level.

In my California public school, children from 30 different countries converge in one classroom, sort of like a mini United Nations.

Some escaped from war torn countries, natural disasters, and famine. Others are here because their parents found work. The rest are natives from the inner city who are learning to count their blessings. All are learning from the diverse cultures, and in the end they find they have more in common than not.

My Project

"How to Read Like A Professor" provides a view of reading literature that my students have never experienced. After reading this, they will never read a s novel the same way for the rest of their lives. I know of know other book that would provide such a rich experience.

Deciphering literature is not a skill that comes easily to anyone, especially not to inner-city AP students.

If my students are to become college ready, they need the texts that will give them the critical thinking skills.
