Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My seniors are so close to graduating! The last big fun trip myself and the other Economics teachers have planned is a day trip to Ellis Island!

Our goal is to show students how immigrants who passed through Ellis and Liberty Islands contributed to the economic boom in the United States, many of our economics students are immigrant or children of immigrants.

We will visit Ellis Island and Liberty island to see how incoming immigrants built communities with each other and in turn, showed how a little compassion went a long way in welcoming each other in seeking a better life to the United States. Like their ancestors who built communities of their own, we seek to show our students the beauty of building community. Building community not only helps bring together people, but it also helps alleviate suffering within groups of people who are struggling with battles of their own. Students can see how immigrant communities in the past came together to alleviate suffering and discover how they can help in their own communities by being compassionate and kind.

To measure learning and success on this field trip, I've created a scavenger hunt. My goal is for each group to take photos of themselves while on the scavenger hunt to earn points for their clues! In order to achieve this, we need your help! This would help students create lasting memories with their peers along the way! With these photos, students are going to remake famous images from the past that show compassion, community, and bonding. Additionally to show my own compassion towards my students, all students will receive a custom made small souvenir token from the trip, as many students cannot afford to take home a memory purchase from the gift shops on the island.
