Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach on the southwest side of Chicago. This year I would like to create a small club for my 8th grade students to connect to senior residents in our community. It will be a pen pal club. Each student will be assigned to a pal in a residential community near by. My students will write to them and hopefully build relationships while bringing some company to individuals who may not receive much, especially during these Covid times.

My Project

This year my students will "adopt" a senior from a local residential community near our school. Students will write letters to these adults and hopefully form a distance relationship. I have asked for envelopes with stamps. I have also requested fleece fabric so my students can make homemade blankets that I will drop off to each of their "pals". This project will not only promote kindness but will also teach students how to address an envelope and write a formal letter. I think this project can be a powerful lesson about friendship and kindness for my 8th grade students.
