This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from one of the most economically distressed parts of our city. Every day, they overcome challenges in their community, families and their individual lives. These challenges include single parent (or even "zero" parent) homes, violence, poverty, and discrimination.

Despite the fact they face many obstacles, they are determined to get the education that will lift them out of poverty and set them on the path to new horizons.

They need to have a rich background of literacy and critical thinking to successfully complete their journey.

My Project

Our school is developing a chess club made up of middle school and high school students. We have attended our very first tournament.

Our chess team took SECOND PLACE IN OUR DIVISION!

Boy, are the kids pumped.

As a part of the chess club, my players have learned logical thinking, patience, sportsmanship and other life skills.

We have enough funds to go to the next tournament in October and we are raising money to go to the November and December tournaments. We need your help to make it to our next tournament. Please help keep the momentum we have developed with your donations.

Currently, we have about 25-30 active members of our chess club. They meet twice a week to learn and play chess. The game of chess teaches many lessons. The players learn logical thinking, long-term planning, sportsmanship, teamwork, critical thinking skills and other lessons that will aid them throughout their life. They learn to win with grace and lose with dignity.

Going to the tournaments gives these young teammates a chance to practice these lessons. They also have the opportunity to connect with hundreds of young people from across our state. They get a chance to see the wider world of possibilities open to them and make new friends.

Please do what you can to help these kids play a great game for learning and have the opportunity to socialize with other young people from our state.
