Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school is such an unbearably hard time for so many. My goal in teaching middle school is to make it a little less difficult while giving my students the resources they need to succeed. I teach at a Title 1 school, which means that the majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

When home life is turbulent, I want my classroom to be a place where students are able to relax and feel at home.

Our school provides food boxes and resources to any families in need, and we pride ourselves on taking care of our own community. Many of our students still enjoy their teachers and coming to school and we feel like it's our job to set them up for success to continue to enjoy learning as they move onto high school. So many of our students have been through so much, we want to be a safe place for them.

My Project

When I was in high school, I went on the trip of a lifetime through the Close Up organization. Close Up informs, inspires, and empowers young people to exercise the rights and accept the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Close Up is also non-partisan, and the facilitators are never allowed to give their personal political opinion, and when an entire group agrees on an opinion, will present the other side to help students understand all the sides of an issue. This trip changed my life and when I started working in a Junior High I knew I had to take my students. 45 students applied and were accepted after filling out an application and receiving a teacher recommendation and they were over the moon excited about going to Washington DC, many for the first time ever out of the state.

However, then COVID-19 hit and has heavily effected our population.

Arizona for a time was the COVID-19 hot spot of the world, and my students who are mostly low income, working poor, migrants, refugees and more were disproportionately effected. Many don't have internet or computers to even access any schooling throughout fourth quarter. When I realized that we would not be able to afford the trip because we wouldn't have enough fundraising time, my heart sunk. I wanted to provide my students with a similar opportunity. Close Up reached out to me, and told me that they are doing online programs this year as an option that is much more cost effective, and seemingly more possible for my students right now.

With your help, our students would be attending the Student Voices: Election 2020 program. It's all online, but still gives students the experience of Close Up.
