Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Social Worker who teaches a seventh grade girls advisory class at a public secondary school on the Lower East Side. (The population of my school is minority and largely low income.) My girls and I meet three days a week and we work on topics such as self awareness, self esteem, community service, goal setting, and academic skills. The course is a required course and part of the academic curriculum. I have approximately 12 girls in my class. Despite having many emotional and familial issues, the girls have persevered and succeeded in their academics. (To date, approximately 8 out of the 12 made the honor roll this semester!) Many of the girls reside in the local housing projects, and have few opportunities to experience the cultural activities of New York City. The girls love to sing and dance, and enjoy gymnastics (though none are on an organized team). After school, many are unable to attend outside activities because their parents are concerned about the violence in their community and in their housing projects; as a result, a large majority of the girls stay home after school and on weekends. My girls have expressed great interest in attending a "big event" in NYC. We have worked hard at trying to raise money for our trip through a number of bake sales. Unfortunately, we have yet to raise enough money to pay for such a large venture. As a result-- we need your help!!! We would like to attend the Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo" show which is being presented from April to the first week in June. We hope to infuse our advisory curriculum with lessons that supplement the girls' attendance at the event. Please help me make this trip possible-- my girls will be so grateful! Thank you for your assistance!
