Our school is located in a rural low income community outside of Asheville, North Carolina. Since the opening of the school, the Latin program has been strong in academics and extracurricular involvement at the State and National Level. Students in the Latin Program have competed in Certamen (Latin Quiz Bowl) throughout the East Coast at Duke University and even Harvard. The students are dedicated, motivated, and passionate about Classical Studies. The only obstacle we face is a lack of funding for all of our activities and competitions.
This year our Latin Program has the most passionate group of students, who have dedicated themselves to not only achieving academic accomplishments but also giving back to their community.
Two of the officers in our sixty member chapter have started a new initiative to participate in monthly service projects in our community with a focus on the environment.
In addition, three students currently hold North Carolina Junior Classical League Executive Offices. They are responsible for planning and organizing our state competitions and conventions. Through this leadership opportunity, our school has been given a powerful voice in our State and more students now want to be involved on a National level.
My Project
Our Latin students will have the opportunity to compete in Academic Competitions, Latin Quiz Bowl, Creative Arts, Graphic Arts, and Olympic Games at the National Latin Convention. It is a week long celebration of Classical Studies. The NJCL Creed is as follows:
"We the members of the Junior Classical League, covenant to hand on the torch of classical civilization in the modern world.
We believe an acquaintance with the civilization of Greece and Rome will help us understand and appraise this world of today,
Which is indebted to the ancient civilization in its government and laws, literature, language and arts.
We affirm the JCL experience develops responsibility, fosters brotherhood, promotes enthusiasm, encourages competition, inspires dedication and enriches our total growth."
The Convention takes place on a University campus each summer, where students live in dorms, eat in the dining hall, and attend competitions, lectures, workshops, and social events all day for a week. This year the Convention is being held at Miami University.
Some unique competitions include oratory and dramatic interpretations of Ancient Latin speeches and literature.
