Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Cypress Hills Community School is a small, progressive public school in East New York, Brooklyn. This is one of the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city. We are a New Visions School with a combined mandate of parent involvement and a bilingual Spanish/English immersion program. I am the music teacher for kindergarten through the eighth grade and founder of our music program. I have always found a deep sense of freedom and accomplishment in musical performance, ever since I started my musical studies at age five. The public school students of our cities need to feel they can accomplish important things beyond the narrow prescriptions of standard academic curricula. My job as the music teacher has been a wonderful opportunity for me to give my students this experience. I have taken my students to the Brooklyn Philharmonic every year in the past, and it has been a wonderful experience for the whole school community. Unfortunately, since the Philharmonic's funding has been cut, their schooltime concerts are no longer free. The minimal charge of $5 per ticket is prohibitive for our school, and without some outside help we will not be able to go to the orchestra this year. Please help us to buy our orchestra tickets!
