Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Cypress Hills Community School is a small, progressive public school in Brooklyn. This is one of the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city. We are a New Visions School with a combined mandate of parent involvement and a bilingual Spanish/English immersion program. I am the music teacher for kindergarten through the eighth grade and founder of our music program. I have always found a deep sense of freedom and accomplishment in musical performance, ever since I started my musical studies at age five. The public school students of our cities need to feel that they can accomplish important things beyond the narrow prescriptions of standard academic curricula. My job as the music teacher has been a wonderful opportunity for me to give my students this experience. This past spring one of my most dedicated and accomplished 5th grade music students auditioned for the Juilliard preparatory division, the most competitive and prestigious pre-college conservatory program in the country. She was accepted! The program offers top-quality education in musical theory, composition, performance, and appreciation for qualified NYC public school students every Saturday for a full day from 9 to 3 for two consecutive years. She has been offered significant scholarship assistance from the Juilliard school, but is required to pay $425.00 towards her tuition for one year. Unfortunately, her family is new to this country and has no way to pay this amount. Please help this gifted young musician obtain the training to develop her talent!
