The Chabot Space and Science Center’s “Voyage to Mars” in Oakland, California is one of the most rigorous and challenging experiences a 5th grader can participate in. Simply, it is one of the best field trips any student can hope to experience! During the “Voyage” all students are assigned specific jobs and responsibilities that must be performed accurately for the mission to be successful. Some of these tasks include: navigating a space probe to investigate a nearby moon, maintaining constant communication between the Mars Space Station and NASA mission control, monitoring life support for fellow crew members, following technically detailed directions accurately, and handling an "unexpected emergency” (such as dangerously low humidity or oxygen levels). No adult help is allowed --- promoting teamwork, conflict resolution, and individual responsibility for students. After successfully completing the mission, all students leave with a genuine sense of pride and an exhausted smile beaming across their faces (while meeting countless state science and math standards). My recent classes have been very fortunate by receiving extremely generous grants through DonorsChoose.org families and individuals. And now my current class of thirty-two 5th graders has naturally put a trip to Mars at the top of their lists as “hopes” for the 2008-09 school year. With your help we would like to make this highly educational experience a yearly tradition, but given our Title 1 School population this will not happen without your charitable support. We promise countless memories, and who knows --- perhaps a future astronaut! My amazingly diverse and eager class would like to thank you for your consideration (fingers crossed, hopes high)!
