My Students

SMS has had a band program since the school opened in 1969. The current school has a population just shy of 1000 students that live in a suburban/rural community. The school is part of a larger county school district (Guilford County) in North Carolina.

The current band program has 145 students in grades 6th through 8th.

The past several years the band as seen growth in numbers and success. In 2019, the school's band program earned its first (since 2010) "Superior" rating at the North Carolina Bandmasters Association's Music Performance Assessment (MPA). The band regularly competes at the Carowinds Music Festival and has earned numerous Superior ratings through the past several years.

My Project

SMS first opened its doors for the 1969-1970 school year. The school first opened as a Junior High school which housed grades 7, 8 & 9.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary, the band program is having a special piece of music commissioned and dedicated to the past directors and students of the Southeast Middle School (Junior High) Band.

After we commission the piece, the piece would be premiered at SEMS and then begin publication to the general public after our premier performance. The published work would prominently display the dedication to the past students and band directors of the Southeast Middle School.

Commissioning a work can be one of the most artistically enriching experiences for our school, community, and students. Most band students will never get a chance to work with a composer and premiere a new piece of music! Help us celebrate this occasion and give the students an experience they will never forget.

Who will be writing the piece?

Composer Mekel Rogers is a local North Carolina composer and band director that has a vast library of published band music for middle school band through the FJH music publishing company.

Mekel has also agreed to visit the school this spring to work with the SEMS band students to prepare the premiere.

When would the piece be finished/performed?

The piece is scheduled to be delivered in early February so that the students can begin rehearsals in preparation for a performance on out May 14th concert. After our premiere, the new band piece will be submitted for publishing through the FJH music publication company and will be made available for purchase and distribution nationwide.
