This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school holds after-school events, has a great website, gets kids free dental + optical care... I can't begin to tell you everything we offer. But few parents take advantage! Our idea: a video display outside the main office and an LED display outside the library to SHOW our parents all we offer.

A picture is worth a thousand words, after all.

And a video, even more. Particularly when over 80% of our parents speak a language other than English. I am the Media Specialist at a K-8 Center in South Florida. Part of my job = 'selling' the school: getting word to our families about all the facilities we provide. Our school cares for kids from four to fourteen. Most of our parents are immigrants from Central and South America. They tend to have low-paying jobs in the tourism industry. Really low-paying: more than three fourths of our kids qualify for free or reduced lunch. We need to tell our families about all the services we offer: our full-service clinic, free optical and dental exams, fun events at the weekend, our after-school care program, clubs (Rock Ensemble / Strong Women, Strong Girls / Students against Tobacco / Gay-Straight Alliance / Guitar Club), our Media Center website, packed with useful resources...and to tell them about the library itself, open to parents, too.

My Project

But how can we make our parents aware of all the services that we offer? A group of 8th grade volunteers has come up with a great idea. Thanks to Donors Choose, we have two digital photo frames inside the library. We put them on our least popular shelves. The frames show a series of photos or - much more effectively - brief videos. We load a visual display about the books that aren't being circulated. The videos attract the kids...and they rush to check out the books!!! Our kids' idea is to put a slightly larger frame in the main office, on top of the counter where parents interact with the office staff. The kids want to make videos, in English and Spanish, that'll show our parents all the services that our school offices to our families. Also, we want to attract parents into the library. Not only to check out books, but also to explore the media center website on the library computers. The kids' idea here is to buy a 'neon LED message board'. Check that term out on 'Google'!

As parents come into the school from the street, the main office, with digital photo / video display, is on their right.

The library, with neon message board, is on their left. The 8th graders will work on the video displays and neon message boards as part of their annual community service project. I think that the kids have hit on a very effective way to advertise our school. This idea really rocks!
