The 800 7th and 8th graders at our school are wonderful- they are hilarious, passionate, and of course, growing! Our school has a diverse population, and approximately 42% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.
Our school library is all about supporting students - their reading lives, their learning, their personal growth - and sometimes little things can get in the way.
We would like to create a “Self-Care Station” in the library where students can quickly grab what they need without asking permission and without potential embarrassment.
The station will have items junior high students might commonly need, but don’t always have on hand: bandaids, lotion, breath strips, deodorant, menstruation supplies, hair ties, glasses cleaner, face wipes, lint roller, and stress balls.
While classroom teachers and the health office provide many of these supplies, access to those spaces is sometimes limited. Because the library is accessible all day long and welcomes every single student, we like to be a central location for students to get access to what
My Project
Self-care means a lot more than putting on lotion or squeezing a stress ball, but small comforts can help a student feel more comfortable and welcome at school.
Students of all ages need to feel connected, welcomed, and cared for at school - one small way we hope to support students is by providing some personal care items in a private, embarrassment-free way.
Adding a self-care station to the school library supports our mission of access in a new way. We hope that by letting students know they can swing by the library to get what they need personally and academically will help build strong, trusting relationships with our school community.
