Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The students in my classroom are diagnosed with autism.

They are bright, talented, and fascinating individuals who are often misunderstood due to communication and social deficits.

The students in my classroom have many abilities; however, they sometimes have difficulty staying focused and need minimal distractions during instruction or they can become easily frustrated and may not understand the best way to regulate their frustration without the appropriate classroom set up and materials.

My Project

As students are coming back into the classroom in person, it is important to not only focus on their academic needs, but on their emotional needs as well.

Many individuals with autism have difficulty with self-regulation, so having things to do to help ease their anxiety is especially important.

For example, some students may choose to play music on the piano, or play with kinetic sand. Some students may enjoy putty or playing with a fidget toy. It is important to have options for them to choose the right way to self-regulate.
