Self-Reflection Made Easy

Help me give my students the gift of self reflection. As percussionists, we often need an easy way to look at ourselves and our stick heights (top to bottom) and the length of the marimba (side to side).

My Students

Yearly, I teach two percussion ensemble classes with a total of 25 students, and then 3 steel drums classes with a total of 60-70 students. The steel drum ensemble has students at a variety of different levels, some who have played steel drums for 3 years, others who have never played a musical instrument. The percussion ensemble classes have highly skilled students that work on advanced techniques and repertoire fit to serve them should they continue studying percussion in college. The students are extremely eager to learn, and there is a tangible feeling of momentum in all the classes. After a successful first 3 years, the students are beginning to understand what they are musically capable of!

My Project

Mirrors are valuable self reflection tools for percussionists and steel drummers, allowing them to look at their posture, stick heights, body orientation to their instruments, and motion of their implements. Often students are able make corrections much more quickly when they are able to physically see indirect stick paths or tense playing. Having mirrors allows students to make adjustments for themselves instead of relying on outside comments.

4.5 octave marimbas are very long, and require mirrors with a lot of length in order to see body positioning.

Students learning 4 mallet marimba especially benefit from being able to see their positioning and stick path, and most facilities with practice rooms for these instruments (much like dance studios) have wall to wall mirrors so that students can watch their own playing and adjust. Help us bring this environment to our school!
