Hi! I am a sixth grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My students are 11 and 12-year-old beginning level English language learners from all different parts of the world. I would like to do a unit of study with them about the famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. I chose to teach about Kahlo because it's really important for students to be exposed to the stories and work of successful, strong women. In part 1 of this proposal, I requested a set of children's books showcasing her artwork and easy-to-read facts about her life. After learning about Kahlo's life and work, I would like for my students to paint self-portraits inspired by Frida Kahlo's self-portraits. In order to do this successfully, we will need various colors of tempera paint (including different multicultural skin tones), 18x24 white paper, paintbrushes of various sizes, and mirrors in which students can look to help them paint their self-portraits. After the self-portraits are complete, we will scan our portraits and create a "mini-museum" website showcasing our work. We have never done a project like this one. I just have not had access to the materials necessary to do a painting project, and thanks to DonorsChoose, I hope my dream can become a reality. Thank you!
