My students need 20 self-portrait mirrors in order to draw themselves in a realistic way. They need color pencils of all colors so that they can better understand shading, skin tones, and the complexity and uniqueness of the human face.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an art teacher in one of the largest K-6 schools in my district. I serve over 800 students a week, on a cart. Our school is very multicultural, serving African Americans, Hispanics, Caucasians, Philippine, Taiwanese, Polish and everything in between.

We are a low-income, limited English school serving over 52% of our students as ELL and despite this we are a very high achieving school. My school is very proud of its diversity and achievements, and we thrive on beating the odds.

I want to do a unit with my forth grade students on multiculturalism and diversity. I want the focus to be on who they are as students. We are going to study the proportions of the human face and using different media, create self-portraits that are not just a picture of a face, but a definition of the individual. Using a mirror is the only way to actually see how facial proportions work. It also allows students the chance to understand that a nose is not just a nose, everyone has different features. Colored pencils are a great way to shade, tone and create colorful, professional looking artwork. The multicultural color pencils will allow all students to feel like their skin color is accepted and celebrated.

In funding this self-portrait exploration, you will be instilling confidence and pride into my students. This is their chance to study who they are on the inside and outside, and create art that expresses these ideas.
