Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is nothing more important to a person's development than self-expression. Self-expression provides students with opportunities to demonstrate their individuality & gain self-confidence. With the pressures from other peers & academics in an urban setting, students are eager to find an outlet.

As a low performing, high-need high school in Elmhurst, one of the most diverse areas in the nation, there is a lot of pressure and emphasis on high-stakes test preparation and exams.

Graduation rates, attendance and motivation is low due to low parental support in a working class neighborhood. There are few opportunities and resources outside of the school that students are aware of and the number of extra-curricular activities as part of the school is limited. It becomes difficult for students at Newtown High School to meet and form meaningful groups where they could express themselves and relieve the pressures, difficulties and anxieties of growing up in an urban school. My students have been trying to form a break dance and hip-hop club in order to express themselves for the past few years; however, with limited space, lack of available advisers, and resources to buy equipment for the club, they haven't been able to develop the club to it's potential.

My Project

Students have been using old and unreliable equipment for their practices. With new and portable equipment, they want to be able to expand their practices to different available spaces in the school. Moreover, students will be able to host events and generate more funding for the club. Greater funds will help them develop the club, enabling them to attend outside events and expand their outreach to other groups and students. Music is needed for practice and practice encourages self-discipline and personal growth. There are many skills and opportunities for character development through dance that will not only be beneficial to one's growth but also to one's academic progress.

Students deserve the opportunity to express themselves and showcase their talents in other ways outside of an academic setting.

By donating to their new equipment, you are helping them build relationships with others and expand their forms of expression beyond the classroom. Not only that, you are providing students with the opportunity to further develop their character and motivation in school.
