Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Self Care and Calming Center is a large office space where students will engage in relaxing and therapeutic activities that encourage self-care, self-awareness, self-regulation and stress reduction. Every aspect of the space is designed to support students as they seek to manage challenging situations and improve their emotional and mental state of being. Features of The Self Care and Calming Center include semi-private "meditation stations", comfortable, versatile, and flexible seating, and calming visual and auditory features. Sensory items such as a water feature, music or "white noise", essential oils diffusers, twinkle lights, "grounding" stones and other tactile/fidget items, coloring books, water painting, and a sand garden will serve as tools to help students "ground and center" themselves. Activity cue cards for stress and anxiety-reducing strategies, positive affirmations, breathing strategies, journaling, and how to challenge negative self-talk will be available to help students learn and practice techniques that will help them build mindfulness and resilience. Affirming quotes, wall decals, plants, and artwork will tie the space together without being overstimulating.

As a health educator and yoga instructor, I have seen firsthand the power of these spaces in transforming students' views of themselves and their ability to be their "best selves." I can't wait to have the opportunity to provide a space that will benefit my students for a lifetime!
