Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day, the students I work with teach me something about the world and myself. I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to participate in the formation of young people that are already expressly dedicated to public service. Since they are students at a magnet high school, they have jumped through a few hoops to get a seat in my class, and they participate with intensity which distinguishes them from students I have worked with in other school communities.
In short, my students rock and I want to do everything I can to support them as they find their voice, take a standpoint, and advocate as an agent of social change.
High school is challenging and adolescence is full of obstacles, so I am compelled to facilitate their self-actualization through academic rigor and individual validation.
My Project
The student learning experience will be context-rich when they each receive their own copy of I Am Malala written by Malala Yousafzai. The author is the girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban. Providing a comparative approach, in 9th grade English class we can improve our self-awareness around our present learning situation through study of education and environmental factors in Pakistan.
Inspired by Malala's story, students will call upon their individual voice to stand-up for education in their own community which is responsive to their unique funds of knowledge as well as linguistic and cultural heritage.
Since this book is available at two reading levels, it can fit the reading level demands of more students. This comparative approach will instill in the students greater perspective on what their high school experience might be and what potential they each have within our learning community.
