My Students

As a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) teacher, I see nine different classes ranging from grades 3rd-8th, giving me the opportunity of getting to know the majority of the students within my school community. For this reason I find it difficult to single out any one class or group of students - there are too many to share, too many students eager-to-take-over-the-world to condense into a couple of paragraphs. However, there is one theme that transcends all of my classes, PASSION. It is this passion that speaks volumes and ignites my drive to teach our students the importance of social-emotional skills in today's world.

What is your passion?

For my students, it is justice, it is sharing their opinions, it is the feeling of being listened to, it is having their interests, thoughts, and dreams acknowledged. Most of my students have been told by society, and those closest to them, that they will not succeed, that their disability or emotional disorder will never allow them to be successful members of our society. What these individuals fail to see, is that my students are filled with a passion that permeates their small bodies - they can and they will!

My Project

The goal of this project is to enhance our learning community and create more opportunities for student engagement through the access of technology within the classroom. Working as a special education teacher, it is important for me to try my best in meeting the needs of our students and incorporating their preferred learning style into the curriculum.

This project will help provide access to technology for all students across the 9 classes I teach, that's over 70+ students!

In addition, the vast majority of my students have emotional behavioral disorders and/or learning disabilities. This will grant me the opportunity to reach struggling students. For example, by giving students the option of typing responses instead of writing, or privately recording their essay instead of presenting in front of the class. At most I have 12 students in a classroom, for this reason my goal is for twelve Kindle Fire 7" tablets.

In a nutshell, the tablets will be used as another outlet for our students voices to be HEARD! Join me in celebrating their passions! Additional details below.

Through the use of their Kindle Fire tablet students will be able to access My Binder: Tabbed Notes, a virtual binder where students can create different tabs for daily reflections, type final drafts, add images etc. They will also be able to engage in academic research, which is especially helpful for end-of-unit projects. In addition, they will have access to a free and safe blogging website, which will provide students a place to respectfully share their opinions about a topic. Lastly, I will be able to incorporate Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame, an app for lower elementary students, into my centers.
