My Students

This is my 17th year as an educator. I started my career as a special education classroom teacher and have been working as a school social worker for the past 11, and yoga teacher for the past year. I have the honor of supporting the needs of students, families, and staff at two schools on Staten Island. My schools are high poverty schools in New York City. All of our students receive free lunch. Ninety-seven percent of our student population is Black or Latino; many are first-generation Americans. Many of my students are transitioning from homelessness and or living in temporary housing. Many of my students have experienced a traumatic event that threatened their sense of physical security. Thirty percent of our students receive Special Education services. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are sweet, silly, creative and talented beings. As an educator that practices mindfulness and yoga,​ I know the physical and mental benefits. I teach mindfulness and yoga to my students so they learn how to pay attention to the relationship between their mind and body. The yoga program that I facilitate offers students the opportunity to build strength, flexibility, balance and mental focus.

My Project

I would like to create an at home workbook for my students to practice social emotional learning skills we discuss virtually. These resources would allow me to print, laminate and mail resources that students can read along with me while we are engaged in virtual SEL sessions. I find that children need a tool that they can hold in their hand look at as we follow along in our discussion. Most of the SEL programs have a one size fists all model these tools will allow me to tailor my session based on the individual needs of each student I support.
