Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach grades preK-5th grade. The classes range from self-contained classes to general education classes. As I walk into the room, the students smile and their eyes light up because they know we are about to embark on a fun STEM adventure. Whether they are a boy or girl, they know that they can do this! They are so curious and eager to learn. Their creativity is endless. From engineering to coding they are always enthralled! I love teaching STEM and introducing new and exciting concepts!

My Project

The educational benefits of LEGOs are endless. Just to name a few of the benefits from using LEGO bricks in STEM are: fine motor skill development, which prepares preschoolers for writing and drawing tasks. Children will practice creativity and imagination without the fear of making a mistake. Roleplay with LEGO projects, mini-figures, and accessories also help with language skills development and social skills, resulting in better communication.

A curriculum that is STEM-based has real-life situations to help the student learn.

Programs like Engineering for Kids integrates multiple classes to provide opportunities to see how concepts relate to life in order to hopefully spark a passion for a future career in a STEM field.

STEM activities provide hands-on and minds-on lessons for the student. Making math and science both fun and interesting helps the student to do much more than just learn.

STEM learning and the challenges we design in our classrooms offer collaborative experiences with real-world connections. This is the perfect opportunity to embed strategies for social-emotional learning. As educators, we can identify the SEL components and raise awareness within our students demonstrating for them the connections to what they are learning and how this is also developing a sense of responsibility, decision-making, or relationships skills.
