My Students

I am consistently amazed and inspired by my students' creativity, humor, heart, and hard work. Our school is located in a predominantly immigrant based community and many of our students families come from Caribbean countries. Our school, our families, and our students believe that reading is a lens in which we can examine our surroundings and self.

What they see of themselves and want to see of the world is powerful and what they reflect in their writing is inspiring.

My Project

Growing up, it was always the rare find for me to come across a novel in which the characters looked like me. That is less so the case now for our black and brown students of various cultures.

When you are a black or brown student, it is rare to find oneself in every book picked up, but my hope is to make our classroom library the exception to this.

Seeing oneself in literature sends the message that you and your stories matter and encourages you want to read more and contribute to that body of work. Our students and their stories matter and these novels are another way to send that clear message.
