Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach predominantly Hispanic Latino students who live in Houston's historic Heights neighborhood. Although I teach World Cultures to all of my students, I have some classes made up of dual language learners, in which I teach the social studies content in Spanish, as well as other classes that are a part of the Vanguard program for identified Gifted and Talented students.

My students are eager and enthusiastic to learn about other cultures and the world, but many are also in need of basic academic skills, including oral and written language conventions, reading comprehension strategies, and organization, time management, and goal setting.

My aim is to incorporate all of these essential skills into my daily lessons and activities so that my students are prepared for high school and the global world beyond.

My Project

These memoirs will be used to create engaging and dynamic lessons for my students to experience life through the eyes of people who are from different cultures, but who experienced similar struggles and obstacles. We will use these books to practice reading comprehension strategies and model fluent oral reading, while also increasing awareness and empathy. Students will work in small groups and with partners to read, discuss, and write about the stories described in these books and thereby increase their communication and interpersonal skills. These class sets are essential tools for me to be able to inspire my students on their life long journey as learners and change-makers.
