Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I will serve approximately 425 students in grades PK-4. We are a Title I school and most of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school opened in September 2015, and together our students, teachers, and families are working to build a welcoming and inclusive school environment. Our students and families come from many different countries and speak a wide variety of languages.

My students love learning from one another.

Each year we ask families to contribute music to a shared song collection, and my students love exploring each other's songs, musical traditions, and languages. Songs from our shared collection are always classroom favorites; invariably, they're the songs my students ask to sing.

My Project

In the year ahead, my first and second-grade students will study percussion ensembles from around the world. In each unit of study, students will explore a different percussion ensemble or percussion style. We will explore some of the musical traditions that are special to my students and their families. Students will also study music from cultures and traditions other than their own; and as students study unfamiliar musical styles, they will begin to recognize the incredible diversity of the musical world. Where some students encounter familiar traditions, others may explore unfamiliar traditions and vice versa.

The instruments my students encounter in the music classroom should reflect the diversity of our school community.

In the past, my students have loved watching videos of percussion performances from various musical traditions and styles. Sometimes they've seen unfamiliar instruments for the first time--for example, when one of my first graders heard a steel pan for the first time and noticed that the pitches of the steel pan matched the pitches of our classroom xylophones. Sometimes students recognize familiar instruments-- for example when a second-grader watched a tabla performance and exclaimed, "That's from my country!"

But it's not enough to just look and listen-- it's important for my students to touch and play the instruments they study. This DonorsChoose project represents one of several steps (stay tuned for phase two!) to build a collection of instruments that better reflects our school. Your support will help to provide instruments for our salsa units and our steel pan orchestra units.
