My Students

Right now, I am teaching two bridge special education classes: a 12:1:1 SPED fifth and sixth grade class and a 12:1:1 SPED seventh and eighth grade class in Harlem. My kids are bright, passionate students who have shown me they want to learn and be better, despite their disabilities.

Most of the disabilities my students have are processing disorder, which is why I need to fill up my classroom with more visuals.

These visuals will help even the playing field for them. Additionally, a lot of my students are ADHD and need to be more engaged in the material, which is why I am trying to "Bring Science to Life!"

More than anything though, I have respectful, hard working kids who want to be better and I am trying my best as their teacher to give them everything I can get to help them succeed at school and life. I know it is a small group of students, but these kids need to know that they are worth it. They are smart and deserving of a great education.

My Project

Microscopes in my classroom will enhance my students understanding of "life below the surface" and it will prepare them for their state exams, high school, and beyond. When teaching my kids about cells and introductory aspects to microbiology, it is hard for them to grasp how much goes on below the surface without ever seeing it. Microscopes will give my students access to this world. They will be able to first hand see how everything is made up of such smaller parts. For example, in our most recent lab on decomposers, we went to Central Park to dig up some local soil samples. Them we "dissected" the soil samples in class and tried to see what it was made up of. Microscopes would have really enhanced this lab because my students could see all the particles that make up dirt and understand that it is not just this "brown stuff" that comes from the earth. Additionally, microscopes are something they could apply to every science topic, not just the current unit that we are in.

Finally, microscopes are a scientific tool that will be used in high school, college and beyond.

By exposing my students now to this learning tool, they will be more confident in their future classes. They won't be the students who have no idea what a microscope is and struggle to keep up with the demands of high school science. I need to expose my students to lab equipment like microscopes to best successfully prepare them for their future academic endeavors.
