My Students

"All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have an equal opportunity to develop our talent." - John F. Kennedy

I teach a diverse 1st grade class of 24 children in a low-income, high-need school.

My school incorporates looping, so I will continue to work with these children next year in 2nd grade. My class is made up of a wide range of children ready to learn. My class has a wide range of academic skills: from children with little background knowledge due to limited experiences to gifted and talented students who are working 1-2 grades above level! I also have a student with Autism that loves working with his classmates. I have children that come to school without many school supplies or lunch money; 67% of my school are on the free or reduced lunch program. I have very limited funds available to purchase supplies for my classroom: everything from writing and construction paper, to pencils, glue, and hands-on materials. I have grown up surrounded by technology and love to incorporate it as much as possible, but with limited funds, it can be hard.

My Project

In our classroom we have 5 student computers, a projector and screen that are connected to my computer, flip cams, microphones, and many other technology tools (several that have been funded through this site!). Most of these tools are for students to use independently or in small groups, where they can work with like abilities. However, I need something use with my whole group so everyone can see and participate. A document camera is like on overhead projector but without the large cart, messy transparencies, and bright light. You put whatever you want everyone to see under the camera, such as coins or shapes or even student work and it is projected onto the large screen. A document camera is small enough to sit on the corner of my desk so it doesn't block any students' view like the old overhead projector.

Having a document camera will be beneficial to everyone in the class because they will all be able to see what I am doing and follow along, which can be hard sometimes in first grade and encourages engagement.

Every little donation helps, so you don't have to donate a large amount to contribute. Sharing this project and the link with other people who like to help also helps a huge amount.
