Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Give a man a fish, he eats for one day; teach him to fish, he eats for a lifetime." 95% of my students are from low-economic background and can not always afford to buy books of their own. My goal is to nurture and empower my students' reading, by helping them to write and self-publish books.

My students are 4th graders in a New York public elementary school.

95% of my students are from low-economic backgrounds in New York. These, predominately second language learners, whose parents are recent immigrants, come with the eagerness to learn and excel in ways many of their parents were not able to do themselves. One of the best ways to teach students, especially from second language households, is through project-based activities. The challenge is that with all of the recent budget cuts and household financial strains, many of the materials needed for project-based activities can become very costly to obtain. This becomes particularly challenging with average classroom sizes of 25-30 students.

My Project

My goal is to have students to develop their own, "Book of the Month" by writing and publishing a book on a topic related to the monthly thematic units. The student will be able to create the entire book: cover design, dedication pages, content pages, and a meet the author pages, through text-to-text, text-to -, and/ or text-to-self connections. These students will be empowered to learn the "Power of the Pen" and the importance of vocabulary to express, while developing a skill-set as a writer. This type of project-based learning can one day manifest itself into producing the next generation of great authors or journalists. For many students, this may be a career option they never realized, but project activities like this one could "unlock the door" to their minds and their possibilities.

The donations from this organization will make such a difference in the lives of these children.

These books will become a part of their legacy and also become a book to add to their personal libraries, of wish many of them do not have...personal libraries. In the past, I have done similar projects and some children leave a book behind for me to keep in the classroom library; and the look on their faces when they return a few years later and see other students reading their books is priceless!!
