I teach a special education class for students with Intellectual Disability. Our class is composed of third through fifth graders with special needs. Our students learn using an alternate curriculum. Most of our students are nonverbal, but they are able to communicate using sign language, gestures, and alternative communication devices.
I have eight curious students who do not let their disabilities limit them from learning and accessing the world around them.
They are eager to learn and share what they know with everyone they meet. They are friendly and very inquisitive. Our students come to school with a positive attitude and enjoy learning and helping one another.
My Project
In our classroom, we provide opportunities for our students to get to know their peers with a wide variety of abilities, cultures, languages, and backgrounds. My goal is for my students to have a camera and memory card to use at home while we continue distance learning. My students will complete family engagement projects with their photographs to celebrate their similarities and differences. They will use cameras at home to capture their life experiences. They will document their culture and traditions to create photo albums to share with their peers. We will be able to amplify the perspectives of diverse families and help my students see that culture is all around them. My students will be able to make connections and engage in positive relationships with one another.
I want to eliminate bias for my students with disabilities and create opportunities for all students to learn the fundamentals of being kind and caring citizens, who have respect, understanding, and empathy for others and themselves.
The cameras and memory cards will provide a plethora of opportunities to teach social and emotional learning skills. My projects will facilitate social interactions between general and special education students. My hope is for them to learn about each other and have compassion, care and empathy as they look at each other’s experiences through different lenses. My wish is to support students’ development of compassion and understanding as they visually and verbally share their similarities and differences. They will be able to learn to support one another and make each other feel valued. I want every student to feel accepted. It will also help build the students’ cultural identity and boost self-esteem. Help me give my students the materials they need to embrace each others' differences and make the world a better place.
